Belonging, Fear, and the Battle for Children: A Social Capital Approach to Helping Families in Conflict

In high-conflict divorces, much of the custody battle is unconsciously driven by a fear of disconnection, abandonment, and identity loss. When parents experience the fear of losing connection with their children combined with low levels of positive social connections, their anxiety fuels rigidity and conflict. This presentation introduces a cutting-edge, evidence-based model showing how improving social health—through friendships, belonging, and emotional support—can reduce legal conflict, improve co-parenting outcomes, and ultimately serve children’s best interests.
