Dear Chapter Members,

Welcome to the 2026 AFCC-CA conference, Practical Solutions for Complex Family Law Challenges, and welcome to Sacramento! We have another great conference in store and our first in Sacramento.

Our world is a complex one, and our practices have followed suit. Changes in science and technology have made things that we couldn’t have imagined 50 years ago a reality. Society has become more polarized – politically, for sure, but also socially. Social media has inflamed our culture, and that polarization walks into our offices or courtrooms every day. And AI is now making it difficult to determine what is true, putting stresses on the system.

Despite this complexity, practical solutions are available, indeed necessary. AFCC’s multipronged approach
of education, research, innovation and identification of best practices gives us the tools to understand the
complex issues and to seek new ways – practical ways – to tackle them.

Some of the leading lights in our field are based here in California and are giving presentations at this conference. Conferences like this allow us to hear from and engage in dialogue with not only experts and luminaries but those from different parts of the state, those who have different ideas, those who are different from us. Be sure to come to the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Open Forum Saturday evening! Dialogue and getting out of our comfort zones will lead to more understanding and empathy, and ultimately more openness to solutions other than those we know.

I hope that you have a wonderful experience at our conference, and you take home some of the practical solutions presented. If you’re not a member of AFCC and the California Chapter, consider joining. If you are a member, consider getting more involved in the chapter – join a committee or submit a proposal for a webinar or workshop. Thank you for your attendance and your support!
